Un colloque international est organisé du 27 au 28 juin 2023 à l'École française de Rome et la Biblioteca dell'Ebraismo Italiano Tullia Zevi autour de l'ouvrage de David Qimḥi, Sefer ha-Shorashim.
This colloquium offers an opportunity to review the centrality and status of David Qimhi’s book. We will explore both previous and later works to better comprehend the reasons for which this dictionary became so famous among Jewish communities in the Middle Ages, and later among Christian Hebraists during the Renaissance. We will also focus on the channels of the book’s distribution and its reception in different geographical areas.
The colloquium seeks to call attention to the diversity of intellectual heritages within Europe, exchanges between scholars, and the transmission of knowledge and texts. Immersing ourselves in the pathways that contributed to the transmission and circulation of the Sefer ha-Shorashim in Christian culture is extremely helpful for remodeling, through historical and philological prisms, relations between Jewish and Christian civilizations. The colloquium will similarly focus on intercultural relations between Jews and Arabs during the period that preceded the writing of the dictionary, and between Christians and Jews in the West during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
